Stop me if you have heard this before: FIU outside hitter Jovana Bjelica was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week . . . again.
It marks the second consecutive week and fourth time this season that JB (left) gets the conference's weekly award. The honor also marks the fourth of JB’s career, and is a conference-best as no other SBC player has received weekly honors four times this season.
Bjelica reached double-digit kills in all three matches last week against Florida Atlantic, Troy and South Alabama. She has now recorded double-digit kills in 20 of 23 matches played this season. JB had 11 kills against the Owls, 21 kills versus Troy, and 20 kills against South Alabama.
REYES ALSO PLAYER OF THE WEEK
FIU goalkeeper Eric Reyes (below in yellow) also earned a player of the week honor. Reyes was named Conference USA's Co-Defensive Player of the Week after posting a career-high eight stops against No. 25 UAB.
The Panthers played the Blazers to a 0-0 tie. FIU has now played three top 25 teams this season and either beat them or tied them. FIU defeated No. 21 Kentucky 1-0 and tied No. 6 UCF 0-0. The Panthers close the regular season Friday at home against Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m.
The FIU women's soccer team begins the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday against Arkansas State. The Panthers are the No. 2 seed and play at 11 a.m. in Murfreesboro, Tenn. -- site of the tournament.
GONZALEZ, PUERTO RICO PAN AM GOLD
Former FIU point guard Michelle Gonzalez and her Puerto Rican team defeated Mexico to capture the gold medal at the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
FIU basketball has had some success in Puerto Rico from Carlos Arroyo to Alex Galindo to now MG.
