Jerrico Lee returned to FIU after a year away from football a lot lighter and with a new position. Lee is making the transition from defensive tackle to fullback this spring. CLICK HERE for a story on Lee.
Some of the other things -- that you might have read on Twitter: @PetePelegrin -- from the second day of FIU spring football:
With just one punter, Chris Ayers, participating in spring ball, quarterback Jake Medlock punted a few times today. Without much work punting, Medlock hit punts between 40 to 45 yards. It is highly unlikely that Medlock will be like former Dallas Cowboys quarterback/punter Danny White during the regular season, but now you know that besides a strong arm, Medlock has a strong leg too.
Once again the tight ends were active in the passing game this morning. Ya'Keem Griner, Zach Schaubhut, Junior Delpe and Ricky Fernandez all had passes thrown their way. And in some instances the tight end was split out wide when the Panthers went to a four-receiver set. Griner looks like he could be a big factor with his receiver skill set and athleticism.
The cornerbacks had a better day than the receivers today. Jeremiah McKinnon had a couple of pass deflections and engaged in some spirited battles with Willis Wright. Sam Miller had a pick six. Miller got his right hand in front of the receiver, deflected the pass in the air and grabbed it running it into the end zone. Sam Gervais and Richard Leonard also played some tight pass D.
The defense won a lot of the plays during the team drills. The defensive line got into the backfield on some occassions. With Isame Faciane getting close to returning from a shoulder injury, some of the younger defensive linemen have had good practices in the first two days. Fadol Brown, Leonard Washington, Marques Cheeks, Dieugot Joseph are among those. Seniors Greg Hickman and a bulked up Paul Crawford (from 270 to 285 pounds) have been solid.
The Panthers put on the pads for the first time in the spring in their next practice, Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
