FIU football turns 15 years old when the 2016 season kicks off against Indiana on September 1. In their short history the Panthers have had some memorable moments -- most of them in wins but some in losses as well. To commemorate the 15 years of FIU football as we get closer to the season opener, I'll count down the Top 15 moments in FIU football history
Having covered FIU football since its first game in August 2002 when I worked for the local newspaper, the following countdown is what I believe are the Top 15 moments. Of course, you may disagree so feel free to let me know what you think in the comments section.
Earlier in our countdown you read about the Hilton Heave in FIU football history. As we reach our final two FIU football all-time moments on the FIU Football 15th Anniversary Countdown we get to the Hilton Weave.
FIU stood 5-1 in the Sun Belt Conference before its game against Arkansas State late in the 2010 season. If the Panthers defeated the Red Wolves they would become conference champions for the first time in their history.
FIU trailed ASU 24-23 with less than two minutes to play in the game in late November 2010. The Panthers faced a third-and-9 from the Red Wolves' 42 when quarterback Wesley Carroll threw a short pass to T.Y. Hilton, who had to maneuver through the ASU defense to get a first down to keep the drive alive. As Hilton weaved through the Red Wolves, FIU receiver Wayne Times (No. 5, photo above) delivered the key block to spring Hilton to a 42-yard touchdown to give FIU the lead.
Fittingly, Times ran in the two-point conversion to make it 31-24, FIU. The defense stopped ASU on the ensuing drive and FIU captured its first conference title.
